Gaming: A New Way to Engage With Shoppers
In 2012, consumers are looking to retailers to continue to find new ways to get and keep them engaged. Cue – “gamification”.
According to a recent post in Retail TouchPoints – Gamification Goes Mainstream – games and competition are proving to be successful ways to engage shoppers. Below are some highlights and a snapshot of an infographic shared in this article.
- Companies will spend about $2.8B on gamification by 2015. Brands getting gamified in upcoming years include Coke, Nike, Nissan and Pepsi.
- Leveraging games to engage with shoppers can increase loyalty and drive traffic. For instance, Walmart recently announced that it will partner with Angry Birds to allow Walmart customers to access special “golden eggsteroid” clues. These clues will unlock bonus levels and Angry Bird merchandise available in Walmart stores.

It’s exciting to see retailers and brands continually use creative and unique ways to engage shoppers. However, don’t forget to optimize on all levels. Engage with shoppers online with localized digital advertising and continue to engage in-store with digital displays and in-store messaging.
